Beating Maniacs in Texas Holdem

While most new Texas Holdem players now recognize that aggressive play is a cornerstone of any winning strategy, they often lack the aggression to deal with a maniac. However, while the maniac presents some problems, they can be overcome.

The first thing that your Texas Holdem strategy must do is to recognize the presence of one. Typically a maniac is the player who will raise before the flop in virtually every game. Another noticeable trait is their tendency to bet after another player invokes the check. Finally, they will rarely, if ever, fold at the later streets.

The Texas Holdem strategy for playing the maniac is to avoid a direct confrontation, because you will just end up losing your stack. Be patient and wait for a high hand to appear. When you get one, you should be content with calling and checking; projecting an image of someone who is intimidated will be helpful as this will encourage your opponent to raise some more.

The great thing about the maniac in Texas Holdem is that even if they are holding marginal hands, they will still play it to the end.
